Cataleya Orchid leaves?

A couple years ago a painter moved my Cataleya Orchid and left it in the Hot Sun for a couple of days. The leaves got all burnt and have big scar marks on them. Last year I had 2 new shoots and only one weak bloom. This year I had two new shoots also, but no sign of blooms. Is it safe to cut these scarred leaves off and what can I do to make this plant look better?

sounds like its had a tough time -- its best to repot every two years a pot that is kind of cramped is better in that more water is absorbed and less is left to rot the roots. so many idiots tell me mine need bigger pots -- and they are big huge healthy plants. the moral of this story is the pot should look small for the plant.

fertilize with orchid specific fertilizer. they have a hard time breaking down urea so any fertilizer that depends on urea for nitrogen won't do -- this includes miracle gro and stuff like that. check your labels.

my cattleyas do best on the east side of the house soaking up morning sun but are sheltered from the sun from about 10:30 am on. the overhead sun will burn them but morning/afternoon sun they love.

never cut off anything that isn't completely dead. plants still utilize their not so healthy leaves for photosynthesis. part of the problem with an plant like yours is since the burn it can't utilize its leaves properly. cutting them would make them worse. you can take dead ends off but if they are burned in the middle its best to let them stay. its kind of like killing your grandma cause she is old even tho she still makes a great beef stew.
Reply:Hi there,

You can cut off the scarred leaves off. Once you cut off the leaves, apply cinammon powder to the wounds.

Just fertilize the plant weekly and place in an area where it recieves full sun. Flush the plant once a month with distilled water (to rid of salt buildup). Hope this helps.
