My orchid has a new leaf group growing off a 6 inch flower stem do I need to divide it?

The main leaves are fine and growing really well but there is a new group of leaves with what looks like roots growing up off the top of a 6 inch tall flower stem. Does this need to be divided or is this normal for an orchid?

That is a new plant forming, in an non-traditional way. I think it's refered to as a "Ki ki". Once the flowers are done on that stem and you're ready to remove it, cut this new "pup" off of the long stem, and place it in the pot with the mother plant, or in a new pot.

I'm not sure what the success rate is, but if there are already some roots showing, you should have it pretty easy. It may take years for the plant to mature to a blooming age. That's why I recommend it be planted with the mother plant. It should also be a "clone" of the mother, in regard to flower size and color.

If you don't remove it, there will be no harm to the mother plant. I believe it will eventually shrivel and die (the "Ki ki").

I hope that this helps

Good luck -
Reply:normally an orchid will throw kikis at the base of the plant, but if it is throwin the kiki from the flower stem it should be removed.let the roots grow to bout 2 inches then cut the flower stem, dont try dividing the kiki from the stem as it could damage the roots.

u can start a new pot or put with parent plant as mentioned
Reply:don touch them, i think it is ok
