I have the miracle grow for flowering plants. Is it safe to use on my Orchid? If so, in what proportion? Only answer if you have done it successfully yourself and you know about phalaenopsis orchids. Thank you!
Can I use Miracle Grow on my Phalaenopsis Orchid to fertilize it?
Truthfully I don't know much about growing orchids.
Better to be safe than sorry Some plants need high acid fertilizer. Orchids need a specific fertilizer.

Reply:Phalaenopsis thrive with an organic fertiliser like fish emulsion, diluted a bit weaker than the recommended dose for indor plants. Don't know about Miracle Grow
Reply:I'd be wary with miracle grow and Phalaenopsis, or any other orchid, as this is a salt based fertiliser. The salts tend to build up in the potting material over time, and can be a major problem for plants. With other types of plants than orchids, which are ok with copious amounts of water, it is easy to flush out the salts periodically. Phalaenopsis and most other orchids prefer a minimal watering, and thus flushing out is somewhat more difficult. Overwatering them can easily cause root rot, and loss of your plant.
I'd use it only if you have no other, nor will get any other fertiliser- and just as a stop gap. They're good with organic fertililisers, like liquid seaweed feeds, or speciality orchid feeds, though the latter can be expensive. I usually feed at a maximum of half strength for whatever fertiliser I use on my Phalaenopsis orchids, often at quarter strength, used at every other watering during the main growing season. I recommend this way as I did harm some of my orchids during my earlier growing experience with such salt based plant feeds.
If you do use it, give it a water only watering in between, to allow the orchid bark etc to lose some of the salt build up.
Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
Reply:Sure - use at half strength and alternate with plain or rain water.
